Multi-objective optimisation of multipass turning by using a genetic algorithm

Abstract

Selection of optimal or near-optimal cutting parameters is a very important issue for every machining process. This paper presents a multi-objective optimisation technique to optimise the cutting parameters in multipass turning processes. A micro genetic algorithm is used to approximate the Pareto's front, by obtaining a set of non-dominated solutions. From the generated Pareto's front, the decision-maker chooses the most convenient solution, in accordance with its particular conditions and interests. An application sample is carried out to illustrate the proposed method and its outcomes are analysed for several manufacturing conditions. Paper remarks the advantages of the multi-objective optimisation over the single objective one.
