Honors and Awards



During his academic career, Prof. Coello has received a number of honors and awards, which are classified in several categories below.

Awards

  1. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the 2019 Luis Elizondo Award in the category Science and Technology. This award was delivered in November 14, 2019 at the Pabellón La Carreta of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey Campus Monterrey.

  2. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello and his co-authors (Dr. Oliver Schütze, Dr. Adriana Lara López and Xavier Esquivel) of the paper entitled "Using the Averaged Hausdorff Distance as a Performance Measure in Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization", received the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award for 2012 (bestowed in 2015). The award was delivered during the 2015 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, on May 27th, 2015 in Sendai, Japan.

  3. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received one of the Cátedras Marcos Moshinsky 2013-2014 (Marcos Moshinsky Honorary Lectureships) in the area of Mathematics with the project New Algorithms for Large Scale Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization.

  4. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello and his co-authors (Dr. Adriana Lara López, Dr. Oliver Schütze and Dr. Gustavo Sánchez) of the paper entitled "HCS: A New Local Search Strategy for Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithms", received the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation Outstanding Paper Award for 2010 (bestowed in 2013). This is the first time that Latin American authors receive this important award, granted to the best paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation during the year 2010. The award was delivered during the 2013 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, at the awards banquet which took place on June 22nd, 2013 in Cancún, México.

  5. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello is the recipient of the 2013 IEEE Kiyo Tomiyasu Award, "for pioneering contributions to single- and multiobjective optimization techniques using bioinspired metaheuristics". This award is given for outstanding early to mid-career contributions to technologies holding the promise of innovative applications. Dr. Coello is the first Latin American to receive this award, since its inception in 2002. The award was delivered during the 2013 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, at the awards banquet which took place on June 22nd, 2013 in Cancún, México.   6. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello obtained the National Award to the Socio-Humanistic, Scientific and Technological Research UASLP 2012 from the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, México. The award was delivered on December 11th, 2012 in a ceremony held at Centro Cultural Universitario Bicentenario of the Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí.

  7. Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the 2012 National Medal of Science and Arts in the area of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences. This is the most important award that a mexican scientist can obtain in his/her country, and is granted by the President of Mexico. This is only the second time (since 1945) in which a computer scientist receives this award and Dr. Coello is the first to obtain it in "exact sciences".   8. In October 2012, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the Scopus Award Mexico 2012 in Engineering, from Elsevier and the Mexican Council for Science and Technology. This award is granted for having the highest number of publications and citations in the area, in the last 5 years. Dr. Coello is the first mexican computer scientist to receive this award, since its inception, in 2007.   9. In November 2011, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the Ciudad Capital: Heberto Castillo 2011 Award in Basic Science, in the category of scientists who are 45 years old or less. This award is granted by the government of Mexico City upon the recommendation of the Institute of Science and Tecnology of Mexico City.

  10. Since January 2011, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello is IEEE Fellow for contributions to multi-objective optimization and constraint-handling techniques. Being a Fellow is the highest distinction granted by the IEEE to its members. No more than one tenth of the 1% of its voting members can obtain this distinction each year.

  11. In October, 2010, Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello received the Medal to the Scientific Merit granted by Mexico City's congress.

  12. Arturo Rosenblueth PhD Thesis Award 2009 granted to Dr. Luis Vicente Santana-Quintero (Dr. Coello was his thesis advisor) in the area of Technology and Engineering Sciences in November, 2009. This is an award granted by CINVESTAV-IPN to the best PhD thesis from this institution. The award is granted each year in four areas and consists of a diploma (for both, the PhD student and his/her thesis advisor) and a check (only for the PhD student). Luis is the first PhD graduate of the Computer Science Department at CINVESTAV-IPN in receiving this important award.

  13. Best Paper Award at the international conference Artificial Evolution 2009 (EA' 2009), held in Strasbourg, France, in October, 2009.

  14. Best Paper Award from the Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization track at the 2008 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2008), held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, in July, 2008.

  15. 2007 National Research Award in the area of exact sciences. This award is granted by the Mexican Academy of Science to researchers under the age of 40 who have shown an outstanding performance, and is the second most prestigious scientific award granted in Mexico. The award was delivered to Dr. Carlos A. Coello Coello by the President of Mexico in October 22nd, 2007. Some pictures of the event as well as some press notes (in Spanish) can be found here.

  16. Best Paper Award from the Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization track at the 2007 Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO'2007), held in London, UK, in July, 2007.

  17. Diario de México medal (presidential award) for being one of the best undergraduate students in México, 1990.

  18. First Runner-Up in the category Theoretical Developments in Computational Intelligence Award at the international conference Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering (ANNIE'2005), St Louis Missouri, USA, November 2005.

  19. First Runner-Up in the category Theoretical Developments in Computational Intelligence Award at the international conference Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering (ANNIE'2003), St Louis Missouri, USA, November 2003.

  20. Best Paper Award in the category Novel Smart Engineering System Design Award at the Artificial Neural Networks in Engineering Conference (ANNIE'2001), St Louis Missouri, USA, November 2001.

  21. Diploma granted by the Association of Civil Engineers of Chiapas for being the best undergraduate of the class 1985-1990.
