CAMEX uses what may be called an ``external mouse,'' in contrast to an ``internal mouse'' whose control program would form an integral part of CAMEX . This means that the mouse program is a TSR (terminate and stay resident, in the language of operating systems), inserting its signals into the keyboard buffer just as though the user had typed them.

In recognition of the fact that many users of CAMEX may not have a mouse, some of the function keys have also been assigned to mouse movements. They have fixed responses, whereas the mouse itself has three different classes of movements.
